2021 Faculty Retreat
The ILT faculty met in Brookings, SD on July 27-29 for the third annual faculty retreat. Each year the faculty of ILT gather to prepare for the upcoming school year. This is an opportunity for the faculty to fellowship, discuss the future and mission of ILT, and to deliver papers and research. Important for this year’s meeting was a discussion about how to help ILT’s ministry students be prepared to enter the congregation as competent pastors.
ILT is probably best known for its academic rigor. While we all agree that academics are a very important part of training for parish ministry, there are many important practical issues in which all ministry students must be competent. To help prepare ministry students, ILT faculty have developed a system of preparation that includes at least one year of practicum (experience in a local congregation), one-year full-time internship, and regular evaluation of students to assess strengths and challenges which can be addressed before students graduate. This is consistent with ILT’s commitment to prepare ministry students for the challenges they will face in the life of the congregation.
The ILT faculty are all Lutheran. Most are pastors and have served in many ministry settings with few exceptions. Their commitment to helping to prepare students for ministry was reiterated at this meeting. The ILT faculty sincerely care not only about the students but also the congregations they will be sent to. As Lutheran Christians, we all face many challenges. The ILT faculty is doing what it can to prepare future pastors to begin to face those challenges with faith in God and faithfulness to his Word.
The new school year begins on August 23rd. New students are getting ready to begin their studies. Current students are getting ready to resume their studies after summer break. Please take some time to pray both for our faculty and students as they prepare to engage in their studies. It is only with God’s help that we can face the uncertain future. To God alone be the glory.
