Institute of Lutheran Theology Faculty Contribute to the New Dictionary of Luther and the Lutheran T

“An immensely valuable resource. Wide-reaching in scope and brimming with first-rate scholarship, this dictionary will be indispensable for anyone interested in Luther and the global history of Lutheranism.”

These words written by Carolos Eire, Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University aptly describe the new 850-page Dictionary of Luther and the Lutheran Traditions (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2017), a volume appearing on the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation.

Members of the Institute of Lutheran Theology’s faculty authored a total of nine entries in this new volume.

Dr. Robert Benne contributed entries on Economic Issues: Capitalism and Socialism (204-05), Economic Life and Lutheranism (205-06), Priesthood of All Believers (620-01), and the State (701-04), while Dr. Jack Kilcrease contributed Mystical Union (530-01), and Dr. Dennis Bielfeldt Theological Prolegomena (731-34). ILT Graduate Adjunct Professor Dr. David Nelson authored entries on Robert Jenson (378), Eberhard Juengel (384), and Wolfart Pannenberg (570). The volume was co-edited by former ILT Board member and friend, Dr. Mark Mattes, who contributed articles on Oswald Bayer (81-2), Carl Braaten (100), Gerhard Forde (259-60), Johann Georg Hamann (311-12), Goerge Lindbeck (426), Justification (385-89), Philosophy (594-98), and the Theology of the Cross (334-37).

While there are many accolades for this new volume, I like particularly the words of David Lose who declares that the work “draws from a constellation of the world’s most highly regarded Luther scholars to produce the definitive guide to the Lutheran Church.” We are blessed at ILT to have some of these scholars in our midst.
