ILT Celebrates the Graduation of Rev. Michael Giese

Congratulations, Michael! You have graduated from the Institute of Lutheran Theology (ILT) with a Master of Sacred Theology (STM) degree and have had all its rights, privileges, and responsibilities conferred upon you. With great appreciation for your work, and in fulfilling the assignment given me by ILT’s board, faculty, and staff, I, Rev. Timothy J. Swenson, presided over your graduation ceremony at Peace Lutheran Church, Rosenberg, Texas, during Sunday morning worship on September 10, 2017. The president of the congregation presented you for graduation and the entire assembly erupted in the joyous thanksgiving of applause at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Michael, you began your studies with us at ILT in the fall of 2012 by enrolling in our STM program. You are the second to graduate of the fifteen enrolled in ILT’s Master of Sacred Theology program. You progressed through the program by enrolling in one course per semester until you completed your thesis in May of 2017. You finished writing and successfully defended your thesis, “Being a Theologian of the Cross in the Twenty-first Century,” and so fulfilled the degree requirements. Now we look forward to your public presentation of the material during Forde Fest II on September 25 & 26 here at the Old Sanctuary in Brookings, SD.

The Master of Sacred Theology is a research degree for students holding the M. Div. or equivalent degree who want to delve deeper into a particular area of theological study. The program requires 30 hours of coursework, including a thesis. The program is very flexible, allowing students to design a course of study aligned with their own research interests. So, Michael, you inquired deeply of both the theology of the cross and the contemporary times. This professional development degree provides you with insight into the tradition and its intersection with these times, the early decades of the twenty-first century. That insight enhances your preaching to, and pastoral care of, your people in these times. It provides, as well, an opportunity for you to teach what you have learned in public presentations.

ILT will welcome you as a presenter, and all the attendees, at the Augsburg Lutheran Churches theological conference entitled “Forde Fest II” hosted here in Brookings at the Old Sanctuary on September 25 & 26. In particular, the conference will take up the subjects of the Law, the Atonement, and of Being a Theologian of the Cross in the twenty-first century.
