Pastor Charlotte (Fran) Hill of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Galena, IL, received the Master of Divinity degree on April 23, 2016 at the Augustana District Convention in Marshall, MN. The degree was conferred upon her by the faculty and board of the Institute of Lutheran Theology and presented by Dr. Dennis Bielfeldt, President, and Dr. Jonathan Sorum, Dean of Academics. The gathered crowd at Living Word Lutheran Church of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC) witnessed the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of the degree being conferred upon her as she accepted her diploma.
Pastor Hill began her studies in the spring semester of 2011. She was called as an intern to St. Matthew’s in 2015. The congregation hosted an ordination and installation service for her on November 22, 2015. Dr. Steve Lien represented LCMC and presided at the ceremonies. Dr. Fred Baltz hosted, presided at the worship, and preached. Attending the ordination service were representatives of ILT including Dr. Bielfeldt, Pastor Timothy J. Swenson, Dean of Student and Religious Life, and many others of the Institute who had worked with, and become friends with, Fran during her time as a student.
The Convention also recognized Intern Angel Scott, soon to graduate from Luther Seminary with an Master of Divinity. Intern Scott was presented by Pastor Michael Hanson of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Morris, MN. Pastor Hanson has been Scott’s supervisor as she has served in St. John’s Lutheran Church of Starbuck, MN.
ILT says, “Thank You,” to the Augustana District, its Service Coordinator, Pastor Randy Freund, its Council Chair, Gaylen Lerohl, and Living Word Lutheran Church of Marshall, MN for their providing time and space for ILT to confer its Master Divinity degree upon Pastor Hill. “Thank you,” needs to be said as well to Dr. Baltz and the people of St. Matthew’s for their mentorship and nurturing of Pastor Hill during the time she was an embedded minister in their midst, receiving the theological education delivered by ILT. Pastor Hill’s husband, Tom, deserves much thanks and praise for his unflagging support as she answered this call to be a preacher of Christ.
Congratulations, Fran! The church will be much enriched through your ministry!
